Weird Things I Ate: Taco Bell's Naked Chicken Chalupa

Updated: Feb 9, 2020

I love weird. The entire concept of bizarre I'm a big fan of. Taco Bell has become my national fast food place of choice for this reason. The Crunchwrap Supreme was the opening salvo when it became a permanent menu item in 2006. 2009 brought the Cheesy Gordita Crunch and 2012 was the final form of skater food, the Doritos Locos Taco.

In 2017, Taco Bell thought outside the tortilla as well as the bun with the Naked Chicken Chalupa. This menu item is essentially the 21 Jump Street of Yum! Brands. KFC had the original cult classic in their Double Down in 2010, but was criticized for being unhealthy. As in two chicken patties, cheese and bacon unhealthy. Because what's bread? This is the more mainstream, better version of the same.

In all honesty, this tastes mostly like nostalgia. The best way I can describe the taste is that of going to your friend's house when his mom isn't home and he decided to heat up the frozen chicken patties in the freezer and mix together the bagged salad to make the absolute loosest definition of a taco. Is it good? It's Taco Bell with no tortilla; it's only going to be so good. Is it bad? No, not at all. The chicken is seasoned well and it actually stays together fairly well.

I'd recommend, but this isn't life-changing. It's good, creative, absolutely weird, and if you're into this, pick it up.
